COUCH, an article of furniture upon which to recline for rest, usually rendered “bed” by KJV. In all some five Heb. words are so tr. 1. יָצוּעַ֒, H3661, a spread, couch from a root, “to spread out as a bed” (Gen 49:4, et al.); 2. מִטָּה, H4753, cushions spread for sleeping (Exod 8:3); 3. מֵסַב, H4990, prob. mesibbah, a round table (Song of Solomon 1:12 only); 4. מִשְׁכָּב, H5435, place of reclining (Lev 15:4, et al. frequently); 5. עֶ֫רֶשׂ, H6911, wooden beds (Deut 3:11). (Cuneiform sources are clear that it is an object of wood, by use of the determinative GIŠ.)
