CLEAR, CLEARNESS. The KJV tr. six Heb. and three Gr. expressions with this term. In almost all of the cases the terms refer to three aspects of light: opaque, translucent, and transparent, for which there are no exact equivalents in Heb. or Gr. More exact renderings of the passages would be (RSV): “You will be free from my oath” (Gen 24:41); “like the very heaven for clearness” (Exod 24:10); “like clear heat in sunshine” (Isa 18:4); “fair as the moon, bright as the sun” (Song of Solomon 6:10); “I will...darken the earth in broad daylight” (Amos 8:9). In the NT the term is used in 2 Corinthians 7:11, “You have proved yourselves guiltless,” and in Revelation 21:18, “The city was pure gold, clear as glass,” and 22:1, “the river of the water of life, bright as crystal.”
